Kulpati K.M. Munshi founded Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on November 7, 1938, with the blessings of Mahatama Gandhi and co-operation & support of several distinguished stalwarts of India’s freedom movement.

Educating youth for better job opportunities and enable them to achieve economic empowerment is the vision for establishing Bhavan’s Gandhi Institute.

• BGI was established in 1996 under the aegis of the BVB one of the largest NGOs in the world, with a mission to serve the society.

• Today, computer literacy is a must for any young person aspiring for a job. Young people, particularly from the economically weaker sections, could not afford such training and were therefore unable to get the available jobs because of lack of computer skills. To address this situation the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB) launched the Bhavan’s Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and Information Technology (BGI), thanks to a generous donation.

    India is the second populous country in the world. Almost 65 per cent of it’s population is below the age of 35 years. It is a fact that if India is able to take advantage of this demographic dividend in the coming decades, then it can become one of the developed countries in the world. The young human resource of our country, when well equipped with the required knowledge, skill and attitude, will raise productivity.
During the last two decades, there is a tremendous growth in employment opportunities in the sector of Information Technology and computers in a large number of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO), Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) and Medical Transcription (MT) companies all over the country. On the other hand, only about 12.4 percent students (in the age group of 18-2 years) complete their graduation, as compared to the 50-70 percent students in the developed countries. The fact remains that a large number of these drop-out students lack the required employability skills. Hence, in 1996, with the initiative of the Hon. Shri Murli Deora, the Gandhi Institute of Computer Education and I.T. was started under the aegis of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, to provide Job Oriented Free Computer Training to youths of weaker sections of the society. At present, in 55 centres located across the country, about 25,000 students are trained every year and to date approximately 2.77 lakhs of students have benefited from the training, out of which a large number have secured employment, to become a part of the productive sector of our Nation. Also, ever year, 5,500 school students from the economically weaker sections, receive Free Computer Education in their respective schools. Till date, 1.20 lakhs students have been trained in these schools. This on-going programme conducted for a noble cause, could only be sustained due to continuous support received from the corporate sector and philanthropic individuals / organization.
